Using skills developed as a toolmaker in the aerospace industry John Scruby has been producing one-off knives since the beginning of 2005. All his knives are made to his own design using only quality materials. The blades are made from high-carbon tool steel, in particular 01 Tool Steel as this will hold an edge better than other steels including stainless steel. 01 Tool Steel not only holds it's edge better but it will also last a life-time of use if looked after. Handles are made from a variety of materials including wood, bone and horn whilst sheaths are cut from leather ranging from 3mm to 4mm thick. All work involved in the knife-making process, from the initial cutting of the blade from plate steel, through the forming of the handles and on to the final finishing and polishing is undertaken by John. The quality of the materials used and the standard of workmanship involved in the creation of a knife allow John to personally guarantee all his knives against damage caused through normal use. All knives can also be returned for re-sharpening with nothing more to pay than return postage. Knife making is only a hobby for John and most of his creations are given away to friends or offered as prizes in on-line competitions. To fund his hobby John will occasionally offer a knife up for sale and when this is the case the buyer can be assured of a quality item at a very reasonable price. However, John will not undertake commissions; knife making is an enjoyable hobby and, despite a queue of waiting customers John is not tempted to turn it into a business.Whether you are given a knife by John or have been lucky enough to purchase one you can be assured that it not only looks good but it will also stand the test of a lifetimes use in the field. After all, that is what they are meant for! |
